"By encouraging the study, teaching and research into the science and art of self-government, to the end that the American people may understand the fundamental principles of democracy and be guided thereby in shaping governmental policies."

— Sumners Foundation Mission Statement

Ò°ÀÇÉçÇø the Award

The endowed Sumners Scholarship Program was established at Texas Ò°ÀÇÉçÇø University in 1994. Since that time, many TXWES students have been honored as Sumners Scholars; they represent only one portion of the total Sumners scholars network.

Begining in Fall 2023, Sumners Scholars will receive $6,000 per semester for tuition and $500 for textbooks (up to $13,000 per academic year) in conjunction with other institutional or organizational scholarships. Total awards cannot exceed the cost of tuition.

The application deadline for the 2024-2025 Academic Year is Feb. 23, 2024.

The scholarship may be applied for a second school year (the senior year) provided the student meets the following criteria:

  • Good standing with the University
  • 3.0 grade point average or better
  • Completion of at least 12 credit hours per semester (full-time status)
  • US citizen
  • Participation in a reasonable number of campus or civic activities for the benefit of Texas Ò°ÀÇÉçÇø, the community and/or the Sumners Foundation
